The following two main roles are indicated for the AWS :

* The routine airport meteo messages, remotely, to the central NMSs with a

* The airport meteo information, locally, to the ATC (Air Traffic control)
Offices with a typical frequency update of one information every one Minute.
. A real-time airport AWS is usually expanded to include also the capabilities of a real-time synoptic AWS.
