Instrument Landing System (ILS) : ILS is a precision approach system normally consisting of a localizer facility, a glide slope facility, and associated VHF marker beacons. It provides vertical and horizontal navigation (guidance) information during the approach to landing at an airport runway. At present, ILS is one of the primary worldwide, ICAO-approved, precision landing systems.

This system is effectively being used by the aircrafts for safe landings during the low visibility conditions. The localizer tracks the central line of the runway and the pointer moves from the center if the aircraft moves away from the central line. Thus acts as a reference to the aircraft positioning.

An aircraft is expected to follow a fixed decent cone i.e. it is expected to decent with a given angle. This reference is given by the glideslope which is again a pointer based indicator.

Thus while perfect landing the pointers are perfectly perpendicular to each other.
